In the limestone rich hills of Waipara Valley in North Canterbury, the Main Divide label represents the expressive and approachable side of the celebrated Pegasus Bay estate. Pegasus Bay was established in 1986 by the Donaldson family, led by neurologist turned winemaker Dr Ivan Donaldson, with his sons now deeply involved in both the vineyards and the cellar. Main Divide takes its name from the dramatic Southern Alps that form the backbone of New Zealand’s South Island and influence the region’s cool climate. The Waipara Valley benefits from warm days, cool nights and free draining limestone and clay soils, conditions that allow Chardonnay to develop ripe fruit while retaining freshness and structure.

The wine shows a bright pale gold colour. Aromas open with ripe peach, nectarine and citrus layered with hints of melon, roasted hazelnut and subtle spice. With time in the glass gentle notes of brioche and vanilla emerge, reflecting careful oak influence. The palate is generous yet lively, carrying flavours of stone fruit, lemon curd and toasted nuts supported by vibrant acidity and a smooth, creamy texture. There is a lovely balance between richness and freshness that leads to a long, satisfying finish. It drinks beautifully now but will continue to evolve over the next six to eight years.

At the table it works wonderfully with roast chicken, grilled prawns, seared scallops, seafood chowder or creamy mushroom dishes.
