Two chardonnay clones, P58 and 76, were picked and processed separately before being matured for 11 months in French oak (40% new). An opulent wine with its bouquet of apricot skins, almonds, lemon oil and acacia honey. It doesn't back away either on the richly fruited, intense, but also well-structured and balanced palate. Finishes pithy and long. Different but equally good, I feel, to the '23.

Set high in the cool northern reaches of the Yarra Valley near Dixon’s Creek, Mandala Wines was founded by Charles Smedley, whose vision was to create wines that reflect the calm rhythm of the vineyard and the surrounding landscape. The estate sits among rolling hills where cool breezes and clay rich soils provide ideal conditions for Chardonnay to ripen slowly while retaining freshness and precision. The Compass range represents wines that point toward the character of the region, and this Chardonnay captures the purity and balance that the Yarra Valley is known for.
The wine shows a pale straw colour with bright green highlights. Aromas open with lemon zest, white peach and nectarine layered with hints of grapefruit, almond and gentle oak spice. With time in the glass subtle notes of hazelnut and brioche appear, adding complexity while maintaining freshness. The palate is lively and beautifully balanced with flavours of citrus and stone fruit supported by vibrant acidity and a fine mineral thread. The finish is clean and persistent, reflecting the cool climate elegance of the Yarra Valley. It drinks beautifully now and will continue to develop over the next five to eight years. It pairs wonderfully with grilled prawns, roast chicken, seared scallops or mushroom dishes that echo its gentle savoury notes.
