Handpicked and whole-bunch pressed to puncheons, hogsheads and barriques (28% new) with partial mlf. A bright green gold. Finely tuned and restrained with aromas of just-ripened stone fruits, Meyer lemon and yellow grapefruit. The palate is gently fleshy, concentrated, tensile and very well balanced. I like, too, the touch of grip on the finish, auguring well for its future potential. Worth seeking out. Drink to 2032.

This wine comes from the fast and furious 2024 season that saw Yarra vineyards working day and night as varieties ripened simultaneously after a wet mid-season was followed by very warm conditions later in the summer.

The I10V1 and Mendoza clone fruit was morning picked across the last two days of February and chilled overnight before being pressed cold and left in stainless steel for an additional day. The juice was then mixed to full solids evenly distributed ahead of the transfer to oak for fermentation. The wine spent a total of ten months in the barrels of which a quarter were new and was allowed partial malolactic conversion.

Medhurst Wines was established in 2000 with the first plantings at the Gruyere property owned by Ross and Robyn Wilson. Located on the western side of the Warramate Ranges, the north facing site sits at an elevation of 130 to 220 metres. The initial Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz vines have since been joined by Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot and Malbec. The wines are made on-site by winemakers Rohan Smith and Kathy McBride.
