Trophy Best Shiraz 2025 Yarra Valley Wine Show

With trophies for both its excellent Rosé and the Estate Shiraz at this year's Yarra Valley Wine Show, Medhurst is killing it at the moment. From its bright crimson-ruby colour to its aromas of red and black fruits, floral notes and spice, this is a jewel of a wine from the get-go. Medium bodied, it's both concentrated and light on the palate, with just the right amount of silky, persistent tannins in support. Worth every cent, and then some. Drink to 2032.

This wine comes from the fast and furious 2024 season that saw Yarra vineyards working day and night as varieties ripened simultaneously after a wet mid-season was followed by very warm conditions later in the summer.

The fruit for this wine was grown in Medhurst’s steep F-block, where the vines face northeast at an elevation of 130 to 150 metres. The grapes were hand harvested early in the morning and chilled until the following morning when they were mostly de-stemmed, leaving roughly 15% as whole bunches. The 20-day fermentation and maceration aimed for gentle extraction for maximum flavour and silky texture. The pressed wine was racked and matured for eleven months in French oak barriques and puncheons of which a fifth were new. The blended wine was bottled unfined.

Medhurst Wines was established in 2000 with the first plantings at the Gruyere property owned by Ross and Robyn Wilson. Located on the western side of the Warramate Ranges, the north facing site sits at an elevation of 130 to 220 metres. The initial Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz vines have since been joined by Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot and Malbec. The wines are made on-site by winemakers Rohan Smith and Kathy McBride.
