Montalto Pennon Hill Chardonnay from the Mornington Peninsula is a fresh, finely tuned expression of cool-climate Australian Chardonnay that walks the line between elegance and approachability. It’s a wine that reflects the maritime influence of the region and the thoughtful hand of winemaker Simon Black, who crafts this cuvée with an emphasis on purity, texture and subtle complexity.
Fruit is sourced from a variety of Montalto’s estate vineyards, including cooler, elevated sites that contribute citrus brightness and tension. Fermentation occurs in seasoned French oak with wild yeasts, followed by partial malolactic fermentation and time on lees to enhance mouthfeel. The result is a Chardonnay that offers clarity and vibrancy with just the right amount of texture.
In the glass, it shows aromas of white peach, lemon pith, nectarine and almond meal, backed by subtle oak spice and a gentle struck flint note. The palate is medium-bodied and beautifully balanced — crisp citrus acidity runs through the core, wrapped in a soft, creamy texture that doesn’t overwhelm the fruit. There’s a chalky phenolic grip on the finish that adds definition and length.
Food pairing: Excellent with grilled snapper and lemon butter, roast chicken with tarragon and garlic, miso-glazed eggplant, or soft cheeses like goat curd or triple cream Brie.
Cellar potential: Best enjoyed young for its brightness and detail, but will evolve gently over 3–5 years with added depth and creaminess.
