2024 Mountadam High Eden Chardonnay, Eden Valley

Mountadam High Eden Chardonnay from the Eden Valley is a beautifully composed, high altitude expression that brings together cool climate brightness, layered texture and a sense of place that is unmistakably Mountadam. The estate sits more than 500 metres above sea level on craggy, windswept slopes of ancient schist and quartzite that naturally produce Chardonnay with taut acidity, purity of fruit and a finely etched mineral line. Founded by the legendary David Wynn and now guided by the next generation, Mountadam has long been one of the elevated benchmarks for Australian Chardonnay. Hand picked fruit is whole bunch pressed, wild fermented in French oak and matured on lees to build savoury depth while allowing the vineyard’s cool clarity to shine.

The aromatics are refined and expressive. Lemon zest, white peach and nectarine lead the charge, supported by green apple, grapefruit pith and a fresh floral note reminiscent of jasmine and wattle blossom. Lees ageing introduces subtle tones of almond meal, cashew and warm brioche, while the High Eden terroir contributes wet stone, crushed quartz and a faint whisper of struck flint. As it opens, nuances of chamomile, citrus curd and gentle spice add quiet luxury.

The palate is sleek, textural and impeccably balanced. A lively core of citrus and stone fruit stretches across a silken frame enriched by its time on lees, while bright natural acidity keeps the wine focused and energetic. Flavours of lemon curd, white peach, pear and subtle tropical hints evolve into nougat, roasted nuts and cool mineral tension. French oak sits seamlessly in the background, shaping the wine without overt influence. The finish is long, pure and refreshing with lingering citrus oil, florals and a chalk edged echo. With a few years in bottle it deepens into hazelnut, honeyed and lightly truffled territory while preserving its fine line.
