The first 864 Pinot from the Block 1 vineyard in Gladysdale since '16. 25% whole bunches. A very bright crimson. Beautifully fragrant with aromas of wild strawberry, red cherry, rose petal and delicate spice. The medium-bodied palate is equally fragrant, with silky, perfectly interwoven tannins. A beautifully balanced wine that will continue to develop over the next six to eight years. Drink to 2034.

Medium-light red-purple, bright colour. Smoky and roast meaty aromas, underneath which are rose-petal and leaf-litter aromas, quite fragrant and stylish, with many layers. The palate is medium-light bodied and lean, with good extension and sinewy texture; complex, tensioned and elegantly styled. A fine and detailed pinot. Drink to 2036.

This vineyard is planted to the MV6 clone. 3/4s of the berries are destemmed into an open fermenter on top of the remaining quarter, which is whole bunches. Pressed into French oak barrels, 10% new, the wine spent ten months maturing before a further six months in tank on lees. The colour here is a very pale crimson. This is an elegant style of Pinot with aromas of rose petals, red fruits, cherries, spices and bay leaves. A fine line of acidity, this is a medium weight style with very good length. On the palate, we see hints of red berries and even a hint of stalkiness emerging. The satiny tannins are finely woven throughout the persistent finish. A ten year proposition. Drink to 2035.

95 points Ken Gargett for Wine Pilot, October 2025

Such a sinewy pinot noir. This has the cellar written all over it. Strawberry, fragrant herbs, earth, undergrowth and tobacco notes move into smoke, sour cherry and – dare I say it – chalk. It’s tight and earthen and stringy and a touch meaty. The real fun will come when it blossoms. Drink to 2032.

94 points Campbell Mattinson for The Wine Front

The 2024 864 Block 1 Hazeldene Vineyard Pinot Noir is very light in the glass, and the aromas lead with cedar wood and peppercorns, cherry seed and forest floor. It is surprisingly savory given the color, and I find this intriguing. The tannins are profuse and spicy, with star anise and cedar notes to close. The acidity is fresh. Drink to 2034.

93 points Erin Larkin for The Wine Advocate, June 2026

The 864 wines are single block varietal expressions released only in the finest vintages. This wine comes from a north facing Gladysdale site on red volcanic soils at 180 metre altitude planted in 1998 using the MV6 clone.
