Palliser Estate Pencarrow Sauvignon Blanc from Martinborough is a vibrant, refreshing white that showcases the more subtle and mineral-driven side of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. While Marlborough often steals the spotlight, Martinborough delivers a cooler, more finely etched expression with bright citrus, delicate herbs and texture that sets it apart. The Pencarrow label offers outstanding value, crafted with the same care as Palliser’s estate wines but intended for early enjoyment.
Fruit is grown on Palliser’s sustainably farmed vineyards in the Wairarapa Valley, hand-harvested and cool fermented in stainless steel to preserve aromatic clarity. A short time on lees adds softness and a gentle savoury note that rounds out the palate.
The wine opens with aromas of lime zest, elderflower, gooseberry and crushed herbs. The palate is crisp and dry, showing grapefruit, green apple and white peach with a hint of wet stone and a zippy, mouthwatering finish. It is clean and expressive without being overpowering, making it ideal as a versatile food wine or a vibrant aperitif.
Food pairing: excellent with oysters, goat cheese crostini, Vietnamese salads, grilled fish tacos or asparagus with lemon dressing. Also lovely with light Thai curries or fresh sushi.
Cellar potential: best enjoyed within two to three years of vintage to capture its freshness and aromatic lift.
