Lime and peach is juxtaposed with flinty reduction in this angular young wine. The palate is defined by chewy, pithy phenolics. There is piercing acidity running through the light flavours, finishing on the sweeter side of off-dry before astringent citrus seed notes dominate once more. A bit of time in bottle could help smooth some of the edges out 23 Oct 2025 Drink 2026–2029

Picnic by Two Paddocks Riesling is a beautifully judged, cool climate expression from Central Otago that balances purity, charm and serious regional character. Central Otago is one of the world’s southernmost wine regions, defined by high altitude vineyards, intense sunlight, cold nights and a long growing season. This combination gives Riesling piercing natural acidity, vivid aromatics and a crystalline sense of freshness. Schist based soils add a fine mineral edge that runs right through the wine.

Two Paddocks is the personal wine project of actor Sam Neill, but make no mistake, this is not a vanity label. From the beginning, the focus has been on organic farming, low intervention winemaking and a genuine respect for Central Otago’s landscape. Picnic is the more relaxed, early drinking sibling to the estate wines, but it is made with the same care and attention. Think of it as serious wine that just happens to be very easy to love.

Aromatically, the wine is bright and lifted. Fresh lime juice, lemon zest and green apple lead the way, followed by hints of white peach, jasmine and citrus blossom. With a little air, subtle mineral and talc like notes emerge, giving depth and a clear sense of place. It smells refreshing and inviting, but never simple.

On the palate, it is crisp, energetic and beautifully balanced. Lime and citrus flavours sit at the core, carried by vibrant acidity that feels clean and mouthwatering rather than sharp. There is a gentle textural element through the mid palate that adds interest and softness, and depending on the vintage, a touch of residual sweetness that is perfectly countered by the acid line. The finish is long, dry feeling and refreshing, with citrus and mineral notes lingering.

This is a Riesling made for the table and for good company. It shines with seafood, fresh salads, spicy Asian dishes, pork or anything that benefits from acidity and lift. Serve it well chilled and it absolutely lives up to its name. While designed for early enjoyment, it will also age gracefully over five to eight years, developing classic toast, lime marmalade and subtle honeyed notes.

Picnic by Two Paddocks Riesling is relaxed, honest and distinctly Central Otago. A wine that feels effortless, but delivers real quality, making it just as suitable for a sunny afternoon as it is for a serious Riesling lover.
