Place of Changing Winds is one of the most intriguing modern wine projects in Victoria, founded by acclaimed winemaker Rob Walters who returned to Australia after working extensively in Burgundy with Domaine Leflaive. His vision was to create a vineyard where site expression, organic farming and thoughtful winemaking come together to produce wines of character and balance. The vineyard sits high on the Macedon Ranges side of the Heathcote region, where cooler conditions and ancient Cambrian soils allow Syrah to ripen slowly while retaining freshness and aromatic lift. The estate is farmed organically with a strong focus on soil health and biodiversity, reflecting Walters’ belief that great wines begin in the vineyard.
Syrah No 2 is part of a series exploring different expressions of the vineyard and variety. The wine shows a deep crimson colour with vibrant purple highlights. Aromas lift from the glass with blackberry, dark plum and black cherry layered with violet, cracked pepper and hints of smoked meat. With time in the glass further notes of olive tapenade, dried herbs and subtle spice begin to appear. The palate is concentrated yet finely balanced with supple tannins supporting flavours of dark berries, spice and savoury complexity. A thread of freshness runs through the wine, leading to a long refined finish that reflects both the cool influence of the Macedon Ranges and the structure typical of Heathcote fruit.
It will continue to evolve over the next ten to fifteen years and sits comfortably alongside roasted lamb, grilled meats or slow cooked dishes rich in flavour.
