The Poggiotondo Vermentino delle Conchiglie IGT Old Vines Organic is a beautifully textured white wine that captures the mineral-rich character of Tuscany’s coastal terroir. Poggiotondo, owned by winemaker Alberto Antonini, has long been committed to biodynamic and organic farming, with a philosophy of making wines that speak clearly of place. The estate is located in Cerreto Guidi, within the Chianti production zone, but its Vermentino vineyards are planted on ancient marine soils filled with fossilised seashells — the “conchiglie” referenced in the name — which impart a distinct saline freshness and complexity to the wine.
The grapes come from old Vermentino vines, organically farmed to ensure purity and concentration. Harvesting is done by hand, and the fruit is pressed gently before fermenting with native yeasts. A portion of the wine spends time on lees in concrete or neutral vessels, building texture and savoury depth while preserving Vermentino’s bright aromatics.
In the glass, it is pale straw with green glints. Aromas are fresh and layered, offering lemon zest, lime leaf, and white peach alongside Mediterranean herbs, wildflowers and a subtle sea spray note. The palate is medium-bodied and textural, with citrus and orchard fruits wrapped around a chalky mineral core. A touch of lees adds creaminess, while the saline finish is long, refreshing and distinctly coastal.
Food pairings suit its Tuscan roots and maritime freshness: seafood pasta with clams, grilled prawns, fritto misto, or vegetarian dishes like panzanella, zucchini blossoms or burrata with olive oil and basil. The wine is delicious in youth for its energy and vibrancy but has the structure to age 5 to 7 years, developing more honeyed, nutty complexity.
