A bright green gold. Aromas of stone fruits, vanilla pod and a whisper of sea spray emerge with a little air. The palate is persistent and well structured, with fresh acidity. Should develop nicely over the next two to three years.
92 points Philip Rich Halliday Wine Companion
From the maritime edge of the Bellarine Peninsula, Scotchmans Hill has long been a quiet achiever, with vines cooled by Port Phillip Bay and Bass Strait breezes. The estate has been part of the region’s story since the late 1970s, and their Chardonnay leans into that coastal influence, freshness, restraint and a clean mineral line rather than overt richness.
The 2024 vintage is bright and inviting. Aromatics open with white peach, nectarine and lemon zest, backed by a touch of grapefruit that brings lift. There is a subtle savoury layer underneath, cashew, a hint of spice and a faint flinty note that adds complexity without dominating the fruit.
On the palate it sits in the medium bodied range with a smooth, flowing texture, but there is a clear line of acidity that keeps everything in check. Stone fruit and citrus carry the core, with restrained oak adding shape and a touch of warmth. The finish is fresh and mineral, with a lightly savoury edge that lingers.
Winemaking is handled with a measured hand, careful use of oak and time on lees building texture while preserving that coastal brightness.
This is a great match for seafood straight off the grill. Think king prawns with lemon and garlic, grilled whiting with herbs, or a simple fish and chips done well. It also works beautifully with dishes like crab linguine, a zucchini and ricotta tart, or crispy potatoes with rosemary and aioli, where the wine’s freshness and texture keep everything lively.
Drinking beautifully now for its brightness and balance, it will hold over the next five to seven years, picking up a little more nutty complexity while maintaining its energy.
