Built not so much for speed, but for an exploration of gentle savouriness and deep, spiced dark fruits. It's a subtle approach from the maker, who knows the grape well from experience in Spain. It looks to dark fruits, blackberry, cassis – really expressive – with dried leaves, earth, spice, pepper and a stylish light herbal edge. Sweeping tannins carry plenty of flavour, finishing dry. A wine that builds the longer it is open. Drink 2025–2031.
93 points Jeni Port for Halliday Wine Companion, January 2026
Tar and Roses was built on a deep familiarity with Mediterranean varieties, and the Tempranillo has been one of the range's most consistent wines. Heathcote suits the variety well. The warm dry summers ripen it fully, while the ancient red soils and gravelly terrain provide enough restraint to keep the wine from going heavy.
Fruit is crushed and destemmed, fermented in tank with regular pump overs, then pressed to a combination of new and seasoned French oak for maturation. The approach is straightforward and the wine reflects the minimal intervention approach.
Deep ruby, the nose shows raspberry, pomegranate, red liquorice and earthy spice. The palate is medium-bodied with supple dark fruit, powdery tannins, good acidity and a savoury finish with a touch of chocolate. Good drinking now and will hold comfortably for several years.
Spanish-style lamb kofta, a simple pasta with tomato and meat sauce, grilled pork ribs or a charcuterie spread. Very good value for the quality in the glass.
Drink now through 2031.
