Thistledown Gorgeous Grenache is a lively, approachable red that captures the bright, juicy side of South Australian Grenache. Thistledown Wines, founded by Giles Cooke MW and Fergal Tynan MW, has built its reputation on championing old-vine Grenache from some of the best vineyard sites in McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley and Riverland. Their philosophy is simple: minimal intervention, careful site selection, and a focus on wines that express vibrancy and elegance over sheer power. Gorgeous Grenache is their playful, fruit-forward expression, crafted to be enjoyed young.
Fruit is sourced from sustainably farmed vineyards across South Australia, many planted decades ago in sandy soils that suit Grenache perfectly. Grapes are picked early to capture freshness, with fermentation carried out in small batches, often with whole bunch inclusion to bring spice and lift. Ageing takes place in stainless steel and old oak, ensuring that the wine remains bright, supple and fruit-driven.
In the glass it shines a translucent ruby. Aromatically it bursts with red berries – raspberry, strawberry and pomegranate – lifted by floral notes of rose and violet, with a subtle hint of spice. The palate is medium-bodied, silky and juicy, overflowing with ripe red fruits, fine tannins and a refreshing line of acidity. The finish is smooth, vibrant and moreish, making it an easy-drinking yet thoughtful wine.
Food pairings play to its versatility: charcuterie, wood-fired pizza, lamb koftas, or vegetarian options like roasted capsicum, beetroot salad or mushroom flatbread. Best enjoyed young, it offers pure drinking pleasure, though it will hold nicely for 3 to 5 years.
