Apostolos Thymiopoulos has become one of the defining names of modern Greek wine, helping elevate Xinomavro onto the world stage through organic farming, gentle winemaking and a deep respect for the vineyards of northern Greece. Alta comes from high altitude sites in Naoussa, where cooler conditions and limestone rich soils bring freshness, perfume and remarkable precision to the variety. Xinomavro is often compared to Nebbiolo for its structure and savoury complexity, though in the hands of Thymiopoulos it also carries a wonderful sense of purity and drinkability.
The 2024 vintage is bright, aromatic and beautifully energetic. Sour cherry, wild strawberry and red plum fruit leap from the glass alongside dried rose petals, oregano, black olive and earthy spice. There is a lovely tension between the wine’s vibrant fruit and its more savoury, herbal character, with fine tannins and lively acidity giving shape and freshness through the palate. As the wine opens, hints of tea leaf, sun dried tomato and crushed stone begin to emerge, adding extra layers of complexity without taking away from the wine’s effortless charm.
This absolutely belongs at the dinner table. Lamb souvlaki, grilled eggplant with yoghurt and herbs or slow cooked beef with tomatoes and olives would all be sensational matches. It would also shine beside mushroom dishes, smoky barbecue flavours or rustic pasta loaded with parmesan and herbs. Slightly cool the bottle and it becomes incredibly moreish, especially shared with plenty of food and lively conversation.
