Tomfoolery Skullduggery Mataro Shiraz from McLaren Vale is a dark, spicy and expressive red that perfectly captures the adventurous spirit of the Tomfoolery label. Crafted by winemaker Ben Chipman, it’s a bold yet beautifully balanced blend that celebrates the earthy depth of Mataro (Mourvèdre) and the plush, velvety richness of Shiraz. The result is a wine that’s both wild and polished — unmistakably McLaren Vale, with a contemporary edge.
The fruit is sourced from low-yielding, sustainably farmed vineyards across McLaren Vale, where red loam and sand over limestone produce wines of concentration and freshness. Each variety is fermented separately with indigenous yeasts in small open fermenters, followed by gentle pressing and maturation in seasoned French oak for about 12 months. The goal is to preserve fruit purity while enhancing complexity and texture through minimal intervention.
In the glass it glows deep ruby with a crimson rim. The aroma is captivating, offering blackberry, dark cherry and plum alongside notes of cracked pepper, anise, clove and earth. The palate is full bodied and layered, with vibrant dark fruit supported by fine tannins and savoury spice. Mataro adds structure, depth and a touch of gamey intrigue, while Shiraz brings roundness and plush fruit. The finish is long and spicy, with echoes of cocoa and dried herbs.
It pairs beautifully with slow-cooked lamb, barbecued ribs, beef brisket or chargrilled vegetables. It’s also excellent with rich stews or aged cheeses. Delicious now for its intensity and charm, it will evolve gracefully for 8 to 12 years, gaining complexity and savoury nuance.
