This tier, as in Filius and the blend, is standing tall of late and it’s pleasing to see, or rather, taste. If anything, this is more elegant and restrained, a balance of citrus, white stone fruit and tropical fruit, a flutter of fresh herbs but texture and a fine acidity lead. The palate lingers, it’s a touch savoury and moreish. Good drinking here folks.

Vasse Felix’s Filius Sauvignon Blanc Semillon is a fresh, vibrant take on the classic Margaret River white blend, crafted by one of the region’s pioneering estates. Founded in 1967 by Dr Tom Cullity, Vasse Felix was the first commercial vineyard in Margaret River and has played a central role in defining the region’s signature wine styles. The Filius range focuses on early-drinking wines with bright fruit and youthful energy, while still delivering the precision and balance that Vasse Felix is known for. Fruit for this blend is sourced from estate and grower vineyards across the region, taking advantage of Margaret River’s maritime climate, where warm days, cool nights, and consistent sea breezes create grapes with intense aromatics and crisp natural acidity.

In the glass, it’s pale straw with green hues, offering a lifted bouquet of passionfruit, lime zest, and guava, supported by notes of fresh-cut herbs and lemongrass. On the palate, the Sauvignon Blanc component delivers zesty citrus and tropical fruit brightness, while Semillon brings texture, weight, and a subtle honeyed undertone. Fermentation is carried out mainly in stainless steel to retain freshness, with a small portion barrel-fermented to add complexity and mouthfeel. The finish is clean, mineral-edged, and refreshingly dry.

This style is a natural match for fresh oysters, grilled prawns with lime, Thai green papaya salad, or asparagus with lemon butter. Best enjoyed young for its aromatic lift and crispness, it’s equally suited to relaxed alfresco dining or as a zippy aperitif.
