Soaring aromatics of green apple, chalk, fresh capsicum and citrus leaf lift from the glass. The palate builds in intensity from tight flavours of citrus and fresh herbs through flinty notes and green olive before finishing dry and crisp with noticeable power on the long finish. Vavasour Sauvignon Blanc from Marlborough’s Awatere Valley is a focused, vibrant white that captures the cooler, more herbaceous side of the region — a stark contrast to the punchy tropical style found in the Wairau Valley. The Awatere brings intensity and definition to this wine, with brisk acidity, mineral drive and savoury green complexity that has made it a favourite among those who like their Sauvignon with a bit more edge.
Vavasour was the first winery established in the Awatere Valley back in the late 1980s, and their deep understanding of the subregion shows in the clarity of this wine. The grapes are grown in ancient river terraces with stony soils, and the cooler climate means longer hang times and more defined aromatics. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel to preserve freshness, with short lees contact to add texture.
In the glass, it shows lifted aromas of lime zest, snow pea, passionfruit, fresh-cut grass and a flinty, sea spray-like edge. The palate is zippy and dry, with flavours of green apple, gooseberry, white grapefruit and a touch of jalapeño. It finishes long, bright and mouth-watering, with a chalky mineral line that adds precision and complexity.
Food pairing: Brilliant with oysters, prawns with lime and coriander, goat cheese and asparagus tart, or Thai green curry with tofu or chicken. Also great with ceviche or sushi.
Cellar potential: Best enjoyed young within 2 to 4 years to capture its aromatic brightness and energy.
