Warramate Pinot Noir from the Yarra Valley is a beautifully understated, site driven expression from the historic Warramate Hills above Gruyere. These slopes were first planted in the late nineteen sixties by the Carrodus family, sharing the same ridge and geological makeup as the neighbouring Yarra Yering vineyards. The grey clay loam and gravelly soils naturally limit vigour, while the elevated, windswept aspect delivers long, cool ripening and fruit distinguished by perfume, tension and fine tannin. Modern custodians maintain a minimalist approach: hand picking, wild fermentation, partial whole bunches for lift and spice, and gentle maturation in seasoned French oak to let the vineyard speak clearly.

The aroma is delicate yet quietly complex. Red cherry, cranberry and wild strawberry sit alongside rose petal, soft spice and a suggestion of dried herbs. A cool mineral note drifts beneath the fruit, evoking wet stone and the dusty slopes of the Warramate range. As the wine opens, hints of rhubarb, orange peel and subtle forest floor add depth without losing the wine’s essential brightness.

The palate is supple, pure and finely textured. Red berries and pomegranate glide over very fine, talc like tannins, supported by lively acidity that keeps everything energetic and precise. Subtle layers of spice, gentle earthiness and mineral crunch appear through the mid palate, gathering into a long, elegant, quietly savoury finish. It is drinking beautifully now but will develop more truffle, dried flowers and woodland nuance over five to seven years.

Wonderful with duck and cherry glaze, mushroom risotto, chargrilled salmon, roasted beetroot dishes, thyme scented chicken, or soft cheeses. A thoughtful, authentic Yarra Valley Pinot Noir that rewards those who appreciate finesse, subtlety and a strong sense of place.
