Very bright, youthful, deep purple colour; dusty, white peppery aromas at first, then sweet cherry fruit which also bursts through in the mouth, with a lovely sweet/ripe core and fine tannins running the full length of the palate, leaving a clean finish without any hint of astringency. 27 Sep 2025 Drink 2025–2039

93 points Huon Hooke The Real Review

A true piece of Australian wine history, this blend traces back to the vision of Dr Bailey Carrodus, who founded Yarra Yering in 1969 and helped reignite the Yarra Valley as a fine wine region. Today, under the guidance of winemaker Sarah Crowe, the estate continues to refine that legacy, producing wines that balance structure, detail and a strong sense of place. Dry Red No 3 has always stood a little apart, built around Portuguese varieties more commonly seen in the Douro, yet shaped here by the cool climate of the Yarra.

Typically led by Touriga Nacional with support from varieties such as Tinta Cao and Tinta Roriz, this is a wine that brings together perfume, spice and structure in a way that feels both exotic and distinctly Australian. The Yarra’s long, even growing season allows these varieties to ripen fully while holding onto freshness and aromatic lift.

Deep ruby in the glass, the aromatics are immediately captivating. Dark cherry, plum and blackberry sit alongside violet, star anise and a mix of exotic spice. There is a gentle savoury thread, with hints of dried herbs and earth adding complexity.

The palate is medium to full bodied, yet beautifully composed. Dark fruits flow through a framework of fine, firm tannins, giving the wine both structure and length. Spice builds through the mid palate, clove, pepper and a touch of liquorice, while a line of acidity keeps everything fresh and focused. It finishes long and persistent, with both fruit and savoury notes lingering.

This is a wine that pairs effortlessly with richly flavoured dishes. Slow braised lamb, spiced beef, or game meats all work beautifully, as do dishes that incorporate herbs and warm spices. It also stands up well to charcoal grilled meats where its structure and spice come into play.

Built to age, it will reward ten to fifteen years in the cellar, developing further layers of savoury, earthy complexity while retaining its core fruit.

There is a sense of intrigue here, a wine that bridges Old World inspiration and Yarra Valley finesse, perfect for those who enjoy something a little different with real depth and pedigree.
