Yves Cuilleron has been one of the Northern Rhône's most respected winemakers since taking over his family's estate in 1987. Best known for his wines from Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu and Saint-Joseph, he brings the same attention to detail to his more approachable regional bottlings. His Syrah IGP is a terrific introduction to the fragrant, peppery character that makes Northern Rhône Syrah so appealing.
Drawn from vineyards outside the region's prestigious appellations, the 2024 is made with an emphasis on freshness, purity of fruit and easy drinking charm. It captures the cooler climate personality of Syrah, with lively acidity, savoury spice and supple tannins rather than the weight of a more powerful southern expression.
Bright ruby red with violet highlights. Blackberry, dark cherry and fresh raspberry mingle with cracked black pepper, violets and a hint of smoked meat. The palate is juicy and medium bodied, with vibrant dark berries, gentle tannins and a lovely savoury edge. Notes of olive tapenade, dried thyme and pepper linger through the fresh, satisfying finish.
Try it with lamb kofta and yoghurt, grilled eggplant with harissa and chickpeas, or duck and shiitake mushroom noodles. It is also delicious with a simple wood fired mushroom pizza, particularly when served slightly cool.
Cellaring: Drink now to 2030. Made for youthful enjoyment, although a few years in the cellar will soften the spice and develop additional savoury character.
