Zafeirakis Microcosmos Malagousia is a radiant expression of one of Greece’s most enchanting white grape varieties, produced by the visionary Christos Zafeirakis in the heart of Thessaly. This is not your average aromatic white—it’s a layered, sophisticated wine that balances expressive florals with serious structure, and it has rightfully earned its place among Greece’s modern classics.
Malagousia itself was nearly extinct by the 1970s, rescued thanks to pioneering viticulturists and winemakers like Vangelis Gerovassiliou and now elevated by new-wave producers such as Zafeirakis. In Tyrnavos, where his vineyards lie at the foot of Mount Olympus, the grape flourishes in the clay-limestone soils and cooler climate of central Greece.
The Microcosmos cuvée is made from certified organic vineyards, hand-harvested and vinified with precision. Fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel and a portion in large used oak barrels, followed by a short period on lees to build texture and mouthfeel.
What makes this wine truly stand out is its incredible aromatic complexity and tension. On the nose, expect white peach, citrus blossom, lime zest, pear skin, and crushed herbs. Underneath the fruit is a streak of flinty minerality and a suggestion of almond or lanolin from the lees. On the palate it is silky yet racy, with bright acidity and a long, clean finish marked by salty freshness.
It’s a Malagousia that trades in both grace and energy—more restrained and ageworthy than many of its floral cousins, and deeply terroir-driven.
Ideal with grilled prawns and fennel, feta and watermelon salad, lemon-roasted chicken, or anything Mediterranean with olive oil and herbs. Can easily evolve in bottle for 3 to 5 years.
