Elegant, pretty and perfumed with cherry, berry, anise, floral touches and a flourish of woodsmoke. The palate is light and lively, with bright acidity creating tension and driving the fresh flavours of wild strawberry, dried citrus peel and Szechuan peppercorn right to the precisely defined finish where very fine, powdery tannins linger. Not a wine of power or dimension but lithe and classically proportioned for elegance. Enjoy this beguilingly perfumed pinot over the next few years. Drink to 2033.

Ata Rangi founder Clive Paton is a passionate advocate for conservation efforts, and has planted more than 75,000 local trees at the Ata Rangi property.

The Crimson Pinot Noir was named 23 years ago in support of Project Crimson, a charitable trust working to replant and preserve New Zealand’s native red-flowering pōhutakawa and rātā trees throughout New Zealand.

The 2025 season proved to be a reasonably trouble-free but did require some extra canopy work in the vineyards due to mid-season rain events. The overall quality of fruit was very good.

This wine was fermented indigenous yeasts using mostly destemmed estate grown fruit, with a 20% whole bunch inclusion. It was matured for 12 months in predominantly seasoned French oak barriques.

About Ata Rangi

Ata Rangi, māori for new beginning or dawn sky, was founded by Clive Paton in 1980 in Martinborough, Wairarapa, at the southern end of New Zealand’s North Island. Today, Alison Paton heads up day-to-day running of the business, with Helen Masters leading the work at the winery while Ian Ewart’s team looks after the vineyards.

Fruit is sourced from three estate sites within a few kilometres of one another within the Martinborough Terrace area on the northside of the town of Martinborough. All share general soil profile is 300–600mm of silt-loam over 25–30 metres of free-draining alluvial gravel. Additional fruit is sourced from The Masters vineyard on the southside of the town.
