Bloody Hill Villages Pinot Gris from Healesville in the Yarra Valley is a beautifully detailed, quietly expressive and utterly drinkable cool climate white from Riva Mayer, whose small batch artisan approach has gained a cult following in record time. Fruit is sourced from hillside vineyards tucked around Healesville, rooted in ancient mudstone and volcanic clays that naturally produce Pinot Gris with perfume, texture and bright acidity. The fruit is hand harvested early in the morning to lock in freshness, whole bunch pressed for delicacy, then fermented with wild yeasts in a mix of stainless steel and seasoned French barrels. Extended lees contact adds subtle savoury depth and a gentle silkiness without muting the crystalline energy that defines the style.

Aromatically the wine is quietly stunning, offering white peach, nashi pear and lemon zest alongside hints of honeysuckle, jasmine, almond skin and cool rain on stone. As air works its magic, more nuance emerges: grapefruit pith, quince, soft spice and a faint herbal lift that hints at the cool Healesville breezes.

The palate moves with poise and brightness. Juicy orchard fruits glide across a supple, chalk edged texture, supported by lively acidity that keeps everything focussed. Pear, citrus, melon and subtle spice unfold gently in layers, guided by a fine mineral thread that runs from first sip to last. There is freshness, there is clarity, and there is just enough savoury dimension to make each sip feel complete. The finish is long, dry and quietly luxurious with lingering stone fruit and minerality. It will continue to build depth over the next two to three years.
