2025 Chatto Killara Farm Pinot Noir, Coal River

Pinot noir from the Killara Farm vineyard, grown by Gill Christian and Todd Goebel in the Coal River Valley. Mid-ruby in the glass with beautifully defined red plum and cherry fruits over hints of souk-like spice, citrus blossom and meadow flowers, a tendril of struck flint, kicked leaf litter, charcuterie, dried shiitake and some distant cranberry. Wonderfully pure and expressive with sleek and harmonious fruit, uber-fine, powdery tannins and a pitch-perfect mineral cadence, with a long draw of flavour as the wine fans out on the exit. Drink to 2038.

A finely poised and polished bottling with red berries, citrus peel, plenty of herbs, spice and a touch of earth. The palate is finely tuned with bright acidity, firm-grained tannins and a classical finish full of class and elegance. A creeper of a wine that will unravel nicely in time, albeit delightful now. Drink or hold.

Medium full colour with a good purple tint; the bouquet is complex and swoony, meaty charcuterie and smoked ham aromas, with background of concentrated dark cherry and spice, the palate fleshy and gorgeously textured, with bold fruit-sweetness, glycerol and fleshy, integrated tannins. Delicious wine, a medium to full weight palate feel with good intensity and length, tannins silken and glossy. Drink to 2037.

Jim Chatto's obsession with Pinot Noir has taken him around the world but it was Tasmania that had the strongest pull. After years of searching, he found his place at Glaziers Bay in the Huon Valley, right on the edge of viticultural possibility. The Isle vineyard planted in 2007 remains the heart of Chatto Wines. A small and carefully chosen family of Tasmanian wines has grown around it, each one a conversation with the variety and the site, driven by an insatiable curiosity for Pinot Noir.

The Coal River Valley sits in Tasmania's driest, warmest corner. It is further from the ocean's moderating influence than most of the island's wine regions, with more sunshine and a longer ripening window. Fruit for the Killara Farm is lovingly grown by Gill Christian and Todd Goebel at their Brinktop Road vineyard.
