Clonakilla Riesling from the Canberra District is a beautifully defined, cool-climate white that showcases the precision and purity this region can deliver. While Clonakilla is most famously associated with Shiraz Viognier, their Riesling is a quiet overachiever, consistently praised for its focus, drive and ageing potential. Crafted by Tim Kirk, one of Australia’s most respected winemakers, this wine is all about finesse, balance and the clear expression of site.
Sourced from estate vineyards in Murrumbateman at around 600 metres elevation, the grapes benefit from chilly nights and a long ripening season, ideal for retaining acidity and building aromatic intensity. The soils are decomposed granite over clay, contributing to the wine’s distinctive minerality and linear profile.
Tim Kirk keeps the winemaking simple and precise. The fruit is handpicked, whole bunch pressed and fermented in stainless steel with neutral yeasts to lock in freshness and varietal purity. There’s no oak, no malolactic fermentation — just crystal-clear Riesling from a cool climate done with restraint.
In the glass, it shows aromas of lime blossom, white flowers, green apple and crushed slate. The palate is taut and dry, with electric acidity, citrus pith and a long, chalky finish. It’s refreshing and bright in youth, but has the structure and acid spine to cellar confidently for 10 to 15 years, developing honeyed, toasty notes over time.
Perfect with oysters, Thai green curry, grilled whiting or a fresh goat cheese salad. Whether enjoyed now or aged for complexity, this is one of Australia's most elegant Rieslings.
