Italian varieties have found an exciting home in the Hunter Valley, and Pecorino is one of the most successful examples. De Iuliis Wines, founded by the De Iuliis family in Pokolbin, has built a strong reputation for precise, expressive wines under the guidance of winemaker Mike De Iuliis. While the estate is best known for Semillon and Shiraz, the winery has also embraced alternative varieties suited to the region’s climate. Pecorino, originally from central Italy, thrives in warm conditions while retaining vibrant acidity and aromatic lift.
Pale straw with a lively green hue, the aromas are fresh and distinctive. Lemon zest, pear and green apple sit alongside hints of white flowers, fresh herbs and a subtle almond note. There is a clean mineral freshness that adds lift to the bouquet.
The wine shows lovely energy and texture, with citrus and orchard fruit supported by bright natural acidity. Flavours of lemon, apple and gentle herbal notes carry through the wine, while a faint savoury edge gives complexity. The finish is crisp, refreshing and lightly mineral, making it both vibrant and food friendly.
Seafood pasta, grilled prawns, lemon roasted chicken or fresh salads with herbs make excellent companions. Best enjoyed over the next three to five years while its freshness, aromatics and lively acidity are at their peak.
