There's apple crumble, baked pear and sweet baking spice on the nose and as the wine sits in the glass these aromas become more layered and intense. The palate has lovely of ripeness of fruit, the flavours fleshy and juicy but still retaining a succulent line of acidity. Drink 2025–2028.

Escarpment is one of Martinborough's most respected producers, founded by Larry McKenna and built on the alluvial gravel soils of the Martinborough Terrace. The Gris is their take on the Alsatian style — dry, textural and food-friendly rather than the off-dry, fruit-forward approach more common in New Zealand. Fruit comes entirely from the Te Muna Road sub-region and is fermented in old French barriques, spending four months in barrel before bottling to retain freshness alongside the barrel-derived texture.
Apple blossom, quince and pear on the nose with a subtle cinnamon spice from the oak. The palate is dry and structured with a chalky, creamy texture, good weight and a clean mineral finish. An honest, versatile white that works as well with food as it does on its own.
Grilled white fish, steamed scallops with ginger, a soft cheese board or light pasta dishes.
