Winemaker James Kellie's years as a contract winemaker for growers across the Great Southern region gave him unique insights into its diversity and potential. His love for the region led him to purchase a former client, Harewood Estate, in 2003 with his wife Careena. This commitment came with building a winery from scratch and a clear ambition: to make wines that reflect the full breadth of the Great Southern rather than a single corner of it.
The Flux series of wines acknowledges the everchanging nature of a vineyard and how the wines need to change with it. Flux V is a Pinot Noir, currently from the F-Block on the Harewood vineyard on Scotsdale Road planted to a mix of Dijon clones.
Denmark Pinot tends to be light and aromatic and is strongly shaped by the region’s proximity to the Southern Ocean. Flux V pushes things a touch further than the Harewood Estate ‘Denmark’ blend: little bit firmer and more savoury, the Dijon clones lending lift and precision that suits the site well. A bit of new oak here compared to the seasoned-only approach for the Harewood label. Bottled unfined and unfiltered, so might appear cloudy in your glass.
Pale crimson, with dark cherry and ripe plum on the nose, a thread of dried herb and a faint earthy smokiness giving it depth. The palate is fine and composed, with soft tannins that have enough presence to keep the wine interesting through to a clean, fresh finish.
Good company for duck rillettes on toast or a mushroom pasta.
