2025 Majella Riesling, Coonawarra

This wine once again shows its pretty and delicate floral side this vintage, with lilies, frangipani and lemon skin. Some quince and Jonathon apples, too. A thorough wash of acidity and some kernel grains add texture across the palate. Bone dry, with a firm, fresh finish. This is perfect outdoor drinking, with low alcohol and plenty of citrus flavour. Great value.

Majella Riesling is a lovely reminder that Coonawarra is not just about Cabernet Sauvignon. While the region is famous for its terra rossa and powerful reds, its cooler pockets and limestone influence can produce Riesling of real clarity and charm. Majella’s vineyards sit on those classic red soils over limestone, bringing brightness, drive and a subtle savoury edge that sets the wine apart from more overtly aromatic styles.

Majella is a family run estate founded by Brian and Marilyn Lynn in 1975, with winemaker Ben Holgate continuing a house philosophy built on consistency and regional expression. Riesling has always played a quiet but important role in the portfolio, made in a clean, precise style that favours purity of fruit and natural acidity over winemaking tricks.

The wine is fresh and expressive. Lime juice, lemon zest and green apple sit alongside hints of talc and gentle floral notes. The palate is crisp and linear, with bright acidity carrying the fruit and finishing dry and refreshing. There is a lovely sense of balance here, making it easy to enjoy young while still having the structure to evolve.

At the table, this is a versatile, food friendly Riesling. It works beautifully with fresh seafood, Asian inspired dishes, salads or simple grilled fish. It will drink very well now for its vibrancy but can also be cellared for five to eight years, developing classic toasty and lime marmalade characters as it matures. A polished, understated Australian Riesling that rewards attention.
