Cantina Mesa was founded in 2004 by celebrated Sardinian advertising creative Gavino Sanna, whose vision was to create wines that captured the beauty, culture and spirit of his island home. The striking white winery has become a landmark in southwest Sardinia, while the wines have quickly established a reputation for combining Mediterranean generosity with freshness and precision.
Giunco, meaning reed in Italian, takes its name from the plants that grow around the coastal lagoons and wetlands of Sardinia. Vermentino thrives in this maritime environment, where warm sunshine is balanced by cooling sea breezes rolling in from the Mediterranean. Sandy soils and the island climate help produce wines that are vibrant, aromatic and wonderfully food friendly.
The colour is a bright pale straw with green highlights. Aromas of white peach, pear and lemon zest rise from the glass alongside hints of wild herbs, white flowers and sea spray. The palate is fresh and energetic, layering citrus and orchard fruits over a subtle saline minerality that speaks clearly of its island origins. There is lovely texture through the middle of the wine, balanced by crisp acidity and a long, refreshing finish.
A brilliant match for freshly shucked oysters, grilled calamari, spaghetti alle vongole, seafood risotto or zucchini fritters with mint and feta. Enjoy over the next three to five years while its youthful vibrancy and coastal freshness are at their best.
