Pooley Wines was established in 1985 when Denis and Margaret Pooley planted ten rows of Riesling and seven rows of Pinot Noir on their farm at Cooinda Vale in the Coal River Valley — a retirement project that quietly became one of Tasmania's most admired wine estates. Three generations of the family have shaped it since, with winemaker Anna Pooley now at the helm, bringing precision and a deep sense of place to everything produced under the label.
Cane cut is a practice of deliberate restraint — the canes are severed before harvest, cutting the vine's water supply and leaving the grapes to concentrate on the vine naturally. The result at Butcher's Hill is a wine of remarkable intensity and focus, with 142 g/L of residual sugar balanced by the kind of razor-edged acidity that makes extended cellaring not just possible but genuinely rewarding. Anna Pooley's guidance is eighteen to twenty-five years from vintage, and the wine's structure makes that entirely believable.
Jasmine, honeysuckle and citrus blossom on the nose, with caramelised apricot, candied lime and a thread of clover honey. The palate is luscious and concentrated, yet that wicked acidity draws everything into line. Lime, orange pith and stone fruit racing clean across the palate, finishing long and bright.
At its finest with a sliver of good blue cheese on a thin, spiced gingerbread biscuit.
