Pooley Wines was established in 1985 when Denis and Margaret Pooley planted ten rows of Riesling and seven rows of Pinot Noir on their farm at Cooinda Vale in the Coal River Valley — a retirement project that quietly became one of Tasmania's most admired wine estates. Three generations of the family have shaped it since, with winemaker Anna Pooley now at the helm, bringing precision and a deep sense of place to everything produced under the label.
This Pinot Noir draws from two estate vineyards — Cooinda Vale and Butcher's Hill — both in the Coal River Valley, where the cool climate and long ripening season build the kind of delicate intensity that makes Tasmanian Pinot so distinctive. Wild strawberries, fresh raspberries and violets on the nose, with dried herbs adding a savoury lift. The palate is silky and composed, with plum skin, cacao and freshly cracked pepper weaving through a fine, persistent finish.
Previous vintages have sold out quickly and this one is unlikely to last long on the shelf. At home with duck breast, a lamb backstrap or a baked eggplant with herbs and good olive oil.
