Intensely fragrant and lifted, though not gauchely so, just a reflection of the season. Stone fruit notes, nectarine, white peach and blossom, custard apple, ripe Tahitian lime, makrut lime, too, jasmine, pomelo, ruby grapefruit, custard apple. There’s a lot to this, and it’s for those who like aromatics over restraint, but there’s so much detail it’s hard not to be drawn in. The palate is properly dry, energetic and sapid, a little stony to close.

Light, bright yellow; subtle floral, spicy touches and waxy creamy lees aromas, a savoury edge - it's more than simple fruit. The palate echoes this, with savoury dryness and some nutty touches, finishing with a little chew from phenolics, well handled. Excellent food wine. Drink 2026-2031.

S.C. Pannell has built a reputation for championing Mediterranean varieties in South Australia, and Fi Fi has become something of a cult favourite along the way. Stephen Pannell, one of the country’s most thoughtful winemakers, has a knack for matching grape to place, and Fiano has found a natural home in the warm, breezy conditions of Langhorne Creek.
The region’s climate allows Fiano to ripen fully while retaining its natural acidity and texture. It is a variety that thrives on sun but holds onto structure, and Pannell leans into that, crafting a wine that is both generous and finely tuned.
Pale straw in the glass, the aromatics are layered and inviting. Pear, citrus and green apple sit alongside almond, fennel and a gentle herbal lift. There is a subtle savoury edge that hints at the wine’s texture.
The palate is where it really shines. Textural and mouth filling, with stone fruit and citrus carried over a slightly waxy, almost creamy frame. A line of fresh acidity keeps everything balanced, while a gentle grip and savoury note add interest through the finish. It feels both rich and refreshing, a combination that makes it incredibly versatile.
This is a brilliant food wine. Grilled fish with olive oil and herbs, roast chicken, or dishes built around white beans and vegetables all work beautifully. It also pairs effortlessly with dishes that carry a bit of spice or warmth, where its texture and freshness come into play.
Drinking beautifully now, though it will evolve over five to eight years, developing more nutty, savoury complexity.
There is a relaxed confidence here, a wine that feels perfectly suited to long lunches, shared plates and good conversation, capturing both the character of the variety and the vision of the winemaker.
