The Spring Vale Melrose Pinot Noir from Tasmania’s Freycinet Coast is a bright, approachable and finely balanced expression of Pinot Noir that reflects both the unique maritime terroir and the winemaking philosophy of this family-owned estate. Spring Vale was established in 1875 and has been owned and run by the Lyne family for several generations. Today they are known for producing wines of elegance and charm, with a focus on Pinot Noir and aromatic whites, from their vineyards nestled in the cool, windswept east coast of Tasmania.
The Melrose Pinot Noir is crafted to be fruit-forward and supple, highlighting the freshness and vibrancy that the region delivers. The Freycinet Coast, with its long, cool growing season and proximity to the sea, ensures slow ripening and naturally high acidity, perfect for Pinot Noir. The grapes are picked at optimum ripeness, fermented in small batches and matured in French oak – largely seasoned – to soften edges and add subtle spice without dominating the fruit.
In the glass it shows a brilliant ruby hue. Aromatically it is lifted and pretty, with red cherries, wild strawberries and cranberries, accented by rose petals and a hint of cinnamon. The palate is light to medium-bodied, silky and fresh, with juicy red fruits, gentle spice and soft tannins. A whisper of oak provides structure, while the finish is clean and vibrant, marked by the refreshing acidity that is the hallmark of Tasmanian Pinot.
Food pairings suit its easy-drinking style: roast duck, grilled salmon, lamb koftas with yoghurt, or vegetarian dishes like mushroom risotto or charred eggplant. It is best enjoyed in its youth for its freshness but will develop savoury complexity over 4 to 6 years in the cellar.
