High in the cool slopes of the Adelaide Hills, Chenin Blanc is proving to be one of the region’s most exciting emerging varieties, and Welkin by Aphelion captures its potential beautifully. Aphelion Wines was founded by husband and wife team Rob and Louise Mack, with Rob previously serving as chief winemaker at d’Arenberg before launching his own project focused on Grenache and Rhône inspired varieties. The Welkin range explores alternative grapes grown in cooler sites, where altitude and long ripening seasons preserve freshness and aromatic detail.

Pale straw with a bright green edge, the aromatics are lively and expressive. Green apple, quince and lemon zest lift from the glass, joined by hints of white blossom, pear and a subtle honeyed nuance typical of Chenin Blanc. There is also a gentle mineral edge that reflects the cool Adelaide Hills terroir.

On the palate it is dry, vibrant and beautifully structured. Crisp citrus and orchard fruit glide across bright natural acidity, giving energy and length. A lightly waxy texture adds depth through the mid palate, while the finish is clean and mineral with lingering notes of lemon peel and apple. It is a fresh, modern expression of Chenin Blanc that balances precision with texture.
