Grant Burge is a passionate amateur war historian, with interest spurred by his forebears who fought in two World Wars. This wine honours not just this history and passion, but also Grant’s own historic winemaking career. Trent and Amelia have created The Brigadier Cabernet Sauvignon for their father Grant, who led the industry in determining the ideal Barossan microclimate for this variety.
Sourced from Burge family owned Corryton Burge vineyard in the Eden Valley where the cool microclimate is ideal for growing premium Cabernet Sauvignon. After completing malolactic fermentation in barrel the wine then remained in oak for a total of 22 months. 100% French oak, 25% of which was new.
Vibrant blackfruit and cassis aromas are layered with hints of spice, chocolate and leather. Refined dark berry and cassis flavours give way to a rich creamy mid palate and fine tannins. Drinking best 10-15 years. Pair with roasted leg of lamb wrapped in rosemary with twice cooked potatoes and an ancient grain salad.
Deep, bright, youthful purple colour with a blueberry, mulberry, fruit-driven aroma, which leads into an elegantly-formed medium to full-bodied palate. There's a sheen of firm tannin to conclude. A very big, solid wine with a bright long-term future.24 OCT 2020 Drink 2023–2043
