A blend of 61/39% pinot noir/chardonnay, hand picked and whole-bunch pressed. Partial fermentation in oak barrels; disgorged 29 Nov '21. I love the cooler 2017 vintage in Pipers River, and Andrew Pirie has captured the crystalline tension of '17 with impressive clarity. Pinot noir leads out, the rose petal and Turkish delight signature of the region present, if a little subdued by oxidative handling, bringing out more of a spicy red apple mood. Chardonnay draws out a high-strung finish of impressive drive and crunchy grapefruit brightness, promising grand endurance. Subtle brioche and ginger nut are the blessing of 47 months lees age, integrated with subtle dosage.

Medium to light straw-yellow hue, with a smoked-charcuterie overtone at first on top of dry-grass and meadow-hay aromas. The palate is delicate yet intense, very dry on the finish and savoury, mouth-puckering in its tannin and acid-powered dryness, resulting in highly appetising properties. Dr Andrew Pirie is among a select few vignerons to be genuinely considered a legend of the Australian wine industry. After more than 30 years producing, consulting and guiding the production of wines in Tasmania Apogee is the culmination of all his years of experience.
The philosophy at Apogee is simple; produce single vineyard wines from the best small holdings of no more than 2Ha., using Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Meunier and Pinot Gris that Pirie has personally selected to make the finest sparkling wines available from Tasmania.
The main production is a classically blended, traditional-method sparkling comprising around 35 % of pinot noir and 40% chardonnay and the balance from Pinot Meunier.
