(Clare Valley & Coonawarra) This is a departure for Taylors cabernet, a brilliant wine which doesn't taste particularly like Clare. (It has some Coonawarra cabernet franc and merlot in it). There are herb and peppermint aromas and some crushed leafy and raspberry high notes that remind of cabernet franc. Violet and cassis aromas. A hint of tamarillo or tomato bush, too. Three years in new French barriques has barely marked the wine. The palate is where it comes into its own, with tremendous intensity and tightly-focused flavour, wonderful purity and extraordinarily fine, but very abundant, tannins. The harmony and length are impeccable. The oak is seamless and tannins are very present but unobtrusive. A great wine and possibly the best cabernet yet made at Taylors. 26 FEB 2019

Winemaker, Adam Eggins, accepted the rather daunting task of creating a wine that would "stand tall against Mouton-Rothschild" to celebrate Taylor's 50th anniversary. At AUD $1, 000, it is believed to be Australia's most expensive current vintage cabernet sauvignon. A blend of Clare Valley and Coonawarra grapes, with a touch of merlot and cabernet franc. It's certainly a very impressive wine with great power that is delivered with finesse. More Lamborghini than Ford Mustang. The wine has the classic cabernet markers of mint, cassis and cedar with a strong influence of decadently spicy French oak that's fairly prominent at this early stage. Texturally it's an absolute winner - teasingly fine-grained. A wine for the cellar.
