Rich, mellow sparkling wine with appealing savoury, brioche-like flavours that suggest a significantly aged component although the wine has an attractive freshness as well. Complex wine. 06 MAR 2024 Drink 2024–2026

#1 of 40 NV Sparkling whites from Marlborough
Cloudy Bay Pelorus Brut is a refined sparkling wine from Marlborough, New Zealand, crafted in the méthode traditionnelle style. Renowned for its elegance and finesse, Pelorus Brut reflects the exceptional terroir of Marlborough and the precision of Cloudy Bay’s winemaking team. Since its launch, Pelorus Brut has become a benchmark for New Zealand sparkling wines, celebrated for its balance of vibrant fruit, complexity, and creamy texture.
The wine is a blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, sourced from carefully selected vineyards in Marlborough’s cool-climate region. The combination of well-drained soils, abundant sunshine, and cooling breezes from the Pacific Ocean allows for slow ripening, ensuring grapes with concentrated flavors and bright acidity.
Winemaking follows the traditional Champagne method. The base wine is fermented and aged in stainless steel and French oak, adding depth and structure. Secondary fermentation in the bottle is followed by extended aging on lees, typically for 24 months, which enhances the wine’s complexity and imparts its signature creamy mousse.
In the glass, Cloudy Bay Pelorus Brut reveals a pale straw hue with fine, persistent bubbles. The nose is an inviting medley of green apple, citrus, and white peach, accented by hints of almond, brioche, and delicate floral notes. On the palate, it is crisp and refreshing, with a vibrant acidity that frames flavors of lemon zest, pear, and toasted nuts. The finish is long and refined, making it a versatile sparkling wine for any occasion.
