Kumeu River Kumeu Crémant is a beautifully precise, traditional method sparkling wine that reflects the same discipline and restraint that have made Kumeu River one of New Zealand’s great Chardonnay specialists. Made in Kumeu, just west of Auckland, the vineyards benefit from a maritime climate with long, even ripening and naturally high acidity, ideal conditions for refined sparkling wine with freshness and finesse.

Kumeu River is a family owned estate, with winemaking led by Michael Brajkovich MW, whose attention to detail and classical approach underpin every wine in the range. The Crémant is crafted using the traditional method, with secondary fermentation in bottle and extended lees ageing to build texture and complexity while preserving clarity and energy. It is made with the same seriousness as the still wines, never treated as a side project.

In the glass, the wine is pale straw with a fine, persistent bead. Aromas are elegant and restrained. Green apple, lemon zest and white peach lead, followed by subtle notes of brioche, almond and fresh pastry from lees ageing. There is a gentle mineral note that adds definition rather than weight.

On the palate, Kumeu Crémant is crisp, balanced and quietly confident. Citrus and orchard fruit flavours flow through a fine, creamy mousse, supported by bright acidity that gives length and lift. Lees derived savoury notes add depth through the mid palate, while the finish is dry, clean and refreshing, lingering with citrus peel and a light chalky edge.

This is a sparkling wine that excels both as an aperitif and at the table. It pairs beautifully with oysters, seafood, sashimi, light poultry dishes or simple canapés. Drinking very well now for its freshness and polish, it will also develop additional savoury complexity over the next five to seven years.
