To be capable of a solera that meets the required average age for Rare (in excess of 20 years) is a considerable feat, the result of generations of work. To then maintain a blended quality year in, year out is possibly as great a feat. Dark amber-walnut. An extraordinary complexity of scent and taste meets the drinker in brittle toffee, dark chocolate, plum pudding, coffee bean and honey-drenched honeycomb with hints of licorice to close. There is an enduring sense of freshness that abides. A beautiful, arresting vinous composition that is an art in itself. 375ml. $150.00

99 points Special Value Jeni Port for Halliday Wine Companion

Few fortified wines in the world command the reverence of Campbells Merchant Prince Rare Muscat. Produced in tiny quantities from the estate's oldest and most precious stocks, this extraordinary wine represents the pinnacle of more than 150 years of Rutherglen winemaking. Awarded an exceptional 99 points and released only when quality reaches the family's uncompromising standards, Merchant Prince is one of Australia's rarest and most collectible fortified wines. Every bottle captures generations of patience, meticulous barrel selection and the remarkable concentration that only decades of careful maturation can achieve.

Drawn from ancient parcels of Muscat that have matured for decades in the Campbells solera system, Merchant Prince is the culmination of countless blending decisions made across generations of the Campbell family. The warm climate of Rutherglen encourages extraordinary richness, while slow evaporation in seasoned oak barrels intensifies flavour, texture and aromatic complexity. The result is a wine of astonishing depth, balance and persistence that has become an icon of Australian fortified winemaking and a benchmark against which the world's greatest Muscats are measured.

Deep mahogany with luminous amber highlights, the bouquet is breathtakingly complex, revealing waves of raisin, fig, Medjool date and Christmas cake layered with roasted walnut, toffee, espresso and dark caramel. As the wine evolves, notes of orange marmalade, treacle, mocha, exotic spice and polished antique timber emerge with remarkable clarity. The palate is incredibly rich yet perfectly composed, coating every corner of the mouth with flavours of dried fruits, burnt toffee, coffee bean, roasted nuts and bittersweet chocolate. Despite its immense concentration, vibrant spirit freshness and remarkable balance prevent any sense of heaviness, carrying the wine towards an almost endless finish that lingers for minutes rather than seconds.

A wine to savour slowly with aged blue cheese, dark chocolate desserts, roasted hazelnuts or simply on its own as the centrepiece of an unforgettable evening. Once opened it will retain its brilliance for many months if stored correctly, while unopened bottles can be treasured for decades. Merchant Prince is more than a fortified wine; it is a living piece of Australian wine history and an experience every serious wine lover should enjoy at least once.
