For a 2004, this is big and rich, but that is to be expected from Guiraud. The fruit is magnificently ripe, with flavors of peach and tangerine syrup along with the core of botrytis and dark honey. The aftertaste is exotically spicy.

Tasted as part of a vertical held at the chateau. The Guiraud 2004 offers milder, more well behaved aromatics than the 2003, and there is better delineation here with lifted scents of apricot blossom, marmalade and a sense of minerality that is not apparent on previous vintages. The palate is well-balanced with a fresh, viscous opening. The acidity is nicely judged and there are plenty of dried mango, marmalade and quince notes to enjoy on the harmonious finish. This is a very assured Guiraud that has an effortless quality that previous vintages did not possess. Drink now-2025. Tasted April 2013.

Château Guiraud 2004 is a beautifully balanced and age-worthy Sauternes, showcasing the richness and complexity of this legendary sweet wine appellation. As a Premier Grand Cru Classé estate, Château Guiraud has been producing exceptional botrytized wines since 1766, with a focus on biodiverse vineyards and organic farming, making it one of the most respected names in Sauternes. The 2004 vintage was marked by a long growing season with ideal conditions for noble rot (Botrytis cinerea), allowing for a precise balance of sweetness, acidity, and depth.
Golden amber in the glass, the 2004 Château Guiraud offers an opulent nose filled with aromas of honeyed apricot, candied orange peel, and ripe pineapple, layered with notes of saffron, almond, and vanilla bean. On the palate, it is luscious yet beautifully fresh, with flavors of caramelized pear, quince, and lemon curd balanced by bright acidity and a touch of minerality. The texture is silky and rich, leading to a long, lingering finish with hints of toasted nuts and exotic spice.
This Sauternes is a perfect match for classic foie gras, blue cheese such as Roquefort, or decadent desserts like tarte Tatin and crème brûlée. Its acidity also makes it a surprising and excellent pairing for spicy Asian cuisine or glazed duck. Already drinking beautifully, the 2004 Guiraud has the potential to continue evolving over the next 20+ years, developing even greater depth and complexity.
