The cuvée Perrier-Jouët Belle Epoque 2007 is the fruit of an astonishing year marked by a very mild winter and an exceptional spring. The temperatures in April, worthy of a summer month, caused the vines to flower early. Although the summer got off to a rainy start with low temperatures for the time of year, the sun’s return in August allowed the grapes to ripen fully, leading to an early harvest and an especially generous vintage.
While preserving the House style, Hervé Deschamps blended this cuvée to emphasise the unique character of the 2007 vintage. His blend brings out the freshness and elegance of the Chardonnay (50%) from the grands crus of Cramant and Avize. From the Montagne de Reims, the Pinot Noir (45%) display a generosity and delicate complexity that prolong the Chardonnay’s finesse. Finally, the rounded charm of the Pinot Meunier (5%) from Dizy provides the finishing touch to this beautifully balanced cuvée.
Appearance: Light gold with an almost radiant clarity and fine, vibrant bubbles.
Nose: Magnolia, honeysuckle and citrus aromas (bergamot, orange, lemon peel) clothed in just-ripe pear and peach notes with a hint of minerality. Psalate: Bold initial flavours are followed by a wonderfully persistent crystalline freshness, revealing white fruit flavours complemented by notes of almond milk.
50% Chardonnay from Cramant, Avise, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger and Chouilly; 45% Pinot Noir from Mailly Champagne and Verzy; 5% Pinot Meunier from estate wines in Dizy to bridge chardonnay and Pinot Noir; 8g/L
Cramant and Mailly-Champagne are the pillars of Belle Epoque; and in the strong chardonnay year of 2007 they have yielded a powerful, rounded, sweet fruited and succulent wine true to the Perrier-Jouet style.
Chardonnay leads out with its cut of focused lemon and white peach fruit, layered with the depth of fig, gigner, vanilla, mixed spice, even English toffee. Its rounded fruit sweetness is contrasted with vibrant acidity, slightly grainy chalk mineral structure and gentle phenolic grip, culminating in a long finish of freshness, integrity and creamy fruit sweetness.
