Red apple, cranberry and morello cherry fruit meet notes of cracked pepper, lifted with naunces of musk and rose petal, with a whiff of reductive tension quickly dissipating, underlined by complexity of nougat, brioche and wild honey, even a hint if truffle unexpected in such desperate youth.

Structurally, it unites all of the enduring potential of its thundering crus with the tension and energy of this legendary season, colliding high-tensile acidity with deep, fine, powdery chalk minerality and just the right level of phenolic bite to bring its finish into stark focus.

Now almost blanc de noirs, boasting 92% Pinot Noir and just 8% Chardonnay from 60%-70% estate vineyards. La Grande Dame is one of the most affordable of Champagne’s elite prestige set, and the stunning 2008 vintage was intricately engineered by the masterful Dominique Demarville for the long haul. It unites all of the enduring potential of its thundering grands crus with the tension and energy of this legendary season, colliding high-tensile acidity with deep, fine, powdery chalk minerality, bringing its finish into stark focus.

A classic, slow-maturing year picked into October. It's a pale, pristine hue - a beautifully assembled mix of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from Aÿ, Ambonnay, Bouzy, Verzy, Verzenay and Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, combining saline-wrapped orchard fruits with great Pinot Noir subtlety yet strength. The aperitif Champagne, but also try with sea trout.

8% Chardonnay from Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, 92% Pinot Noir (37% Verzy, 23% Bouzy, 14% Verzenay, 14% Ay, 4% Ambonnay); 60-70% Estate vineyards; aged 9 years on lees; 6g/L Dosage. Cork.

Dominique Dearville's first vintage leaps forth with 92 percent pinot noir, the highest proportion in La Grande Dame yet (it's normally more like 60% percent).

'The idea is that it will be now always more than 90%', he reveals. 'Pinot Noir is the signature Veuve Clicquot, and now La Grande Dame really presents the style of the house, as the only prestige cuvee with this level of pinot. This cuvee aims to show the mandate of the house, that pinot noir has a beautiful elegance, finesse and delicacy, yet with creaminess and silkiness'.

It lives up to this aspiration with effortless conviction, its evolution inside the bottle matched with a brand-new label. For such a strong pinot noir presence, its bright, pale straw hue even at 11 years of age is refreshing. The focus and tension of 2008 is built with the body and richness of pinot noir to spectacular effort, uniting the freshness of a core of more than 50 percent Verzy and Verzenay with intensity of Bouzy and Ambonnay, and the toning restraint of a touch of Le Mesnil chardonnay.
