The 2010 Chateau Guiraud has fine purity and minerality on the nose, with touches of passion fruit and dried apricot, later quince joining the fray. The palate is very well-balanced with a lively entry of apricot, quince and a touch of hazelnut. The middle and finish demonstrate fine tension and a lot of freshness. Individual lots seemed to have more race than the final sample, and I suspect it will warrant a higher score once the final blend is in bottle.

Château Guiraud 1er Cru Sauternes is a luxurious and finely balanced dessert wine from one of the most iconic estates in Bordeaux’s southern Graves. Classified as a Premier Cru in the 1855 Classification, Guiraud has long been known for its deep commitment to terroir, tradition, and organic viticulture—making it the first Grand Cru Classé in Sauternes to be certified organic.
Located in the heart of Sauternes, Château Guiraud benefits from the unique microclimate formed by the Ciron and Garonne rivers, which creates the perfect conditions for noble rot. The blend is typically dominated by Sémillon with a smaller proportion of Sauvignon Blanc, resulting in a wine that balances richness and tension, power and elegance.
Each grape is handpicked in multiple passes through the vineyard to select only the botrytised berries at peak concentration. Fermentation and ageing take place in French oak barrels, about half of which are new, over 18 to 24 months. The result is a wine of golden complexity and stunning longevity.
In the glass, it opens with aromas of apricot, acacia honey, orange marmalade, and toasted almond. The palate is opulent but poised, with luscious sweetness lifted by bright acidity and notes of candied citrus, exotic spice, and delicate florals. The finish is endless and graceful, hinting at decades of ageing potential.
Perfect with blue cheese, tarte tatin, foie gras, or simply savoured slowly after dinner.
