Congratulations Tim Smith! Barossa Valley Winemaker of the year!
The great undervalued variety of Mataro, a Spanish synonym widely used in the Barossa for the French variety Mourvedre, has long held a fascination for Tim Smith. Mataro has the classic varietal aromas of Chinese-5-spice, licorice and dark berry fruits. The palate is at once spicy, with lively defining tannins due to being picked at exactly the right time and being under the deft hand of Tim Smith once in the winery…vineyard age is up to 130 years and usually up to four vineyard selections make the final blend.Sourced from three vineyards, one at Light Pass, two in Greenock, some vines up to 100 years old. Very generously flavoured, although not over the top, with smooth, supple, dark berry fruits, soft tannins and minimal oak imposition.
