This is the best-of-vintage shiraz and is only made in in small quantities in exceptional vintages. Very dense Shiraz with an “old vine” richness and weight. Dark fruits including blackberry with liquorice, Oriental spices and classy French oak. A powerful, muscular wine that’s great to drink now but promises much more in time. 05 AUG 2016 Drink 2016–2033

This is a rare full-bodied wine with finesse. The coupling comes about courtesy of the way the oak is integrated and the tannins honed, though not by any apology from the blackberry and black cherry fruit. 13.8%/ R.R.P. $150/ Drink by 2043

Michael Shiraz is Wynns Coonawarra Estate’s best-of-vintage Shiraz. The first Michael (once called Michael Hermitage) was a one-off from the 1955 vintage, made after proprietor David Wynn noticed the outstanding quality of the wine from two particular barrels. He ordered that these two barrels be bottled separately and this wine – named after Wynn’s young son – is a legend of the Australian wine industry. Original bottles still offer a great wine experience. Revived with the superb 1990 vintage, the fruit used for the Michael Shiraz comes from the best vineyard sites in Coonawarra. It is only made in years when the grapes are of extraordinarily high quality. Matured 15 months in new and seasoned French oak barrels (20% new). Bright purple with a vivid purple hue. Intense notes of blueberry and strawberry, with darker complexing hints of black cherry, plum and lifted dandelion florals. Subtle notes of black cherry provide layered depth and complexity. A red fruit thread creates an intensely bright core. Soft framing powdery tannins, restrained nutty oak and hints of ginger add elegant savoury notes and the promise of silky elegance as this wine ages.
