Toolangi's 'Grand Cru' Chardonnay is drawn from the premium, low cropped 'Reserve' Chardonnay parcel, also known as Block F, which lies next to the Pauls Lane block. 2014 begets another deep, pulsating Chardonnay from the Toolangi/Giaconda foundry; classic Reserve level depth of fruit and flavour bisected by a complex, savoury edge and a powerful, driven finish.
Crafted by Rick Kinzbrunner in Beechworth, the 2014 was whole bunch basket pressed, fully fermented with wild yeasts and raised in 50% new and 50% one-year-old French oak barriques for 18 months. Bottled without filtration.
Hand-picked Mendoza clone, crushed, wild-fermented in French barriques (50% new) for 18 months. Gleaming straw-green; an extremely complex, rich and long chardonnay with high quality fruit and equally good oak. It definitely aspires to the richness of Montrachet or related Grand Crus, and does a good job.
