En Guesnes, or Ez Guesnes as it appears on the map, is a cracking little site tucked up behind the 1er Cru Le Meix Cadot. Dureuil has a little Chardonnay here, but it’s the 1.3 hectares of 40 year old Pinot Noir vines on the cool, clay-limestone soils that make up the bulk of his holdings. We never fail to request an allocation of this wine, (although we don’t always get one!). It’s always outstanding.
The fruit for the 2015 was mostly de-stemmed, given a cold maceration for eight-ten days, naturally fermented over a further ten days in tank, then transferred to barrel (one third new). It was bottled according to the lunar cycle, after 18 months aging. This is Rully’s answer to Nuits-Saint-Georges! Deep, inky, raspberry and kirsch scented fruit and plenty of fine structure.
Give it loads of air and hearty food now, or three-five years ageing to bring out the best in the wine.
